I then switched from a DSL modem to cable internet, and from a desktop computer to a laptop.
This year, I used 199 kWh in April-May, or $15.84 of electricity. 47 kWh of that was when I was at work (refrigerator usage), and 152 kWh was used when I was at home on the computer. My non-refrigerator power usage dropped by more than a third.
Power companies are currently giving subsidies to people so they will switch to more energy-efficient refrigerators. If my usage is representative, it'd also be useful to pay for people to switch to laptops or tablets.
