Airport gates

At the airports in Rome, Albania, and Kosovo, aircraft do not drive up to the terminal and connect their front hatch to a rainproof tunnel. Instead, they park near the runway, and portable stairs are wheeled to both the front and rear doors. Passengers are transported between then terminal and the aircraft by low-floored busses.

The advantage: smaller terminals with no need to walk great distances, and faster loading and unloading of aircraft. The disadvantage: standing out on the tarmac when it's 40 below, waiting to climb an icy stairway. Not an issue here, of course.
