Bike advice

(left work 10:30 PM)

It takes me about an hour to get from my place to Sandy's place on the bus, subway, and walking. According to Google Maps, it would take me about an hour to get there by bike, taking side streets to avoid traffic.

So, I'd like to get a bike.

The only bikes I've ridden in recent years have been the ones available from the public rental racks (formerly "BIXI"). http://www.bikesharetoronto.com/

Sandy and I went to some used bike shops on the weekend, but they all seemed overpriced, in bad shape, and/or probably stolen. Big box stores like Canadian Tire have cheap bikes, but they have poor reviews.

Here's what I'm thinking I'll do:

Go to CyclePath at Yonge & Eglinton (http://cyclepathtoronto.com/), as they seem friendly to noob riders.
Get a hybrid bike (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hybrid_bicycle)
Ask for these accessories:

  • Fenders for driving in rain without getting all muddy

  • Chain guard so I don't get my pant caught up

  • Lights and reflectors for safety

  • Panniers to hold my CPAP machine and a change of clothes

  • Helmet

  • U-type lock

  • Bell

Do you have any suggestions for things I should look for, brands that are good, or reasonable prices?
