David Weber writes moderately decent space opera. Some of it is terrible, like "Out Of The Dark", which I ranted about before[1]. Occasionally he lets his political views interfere with a story (seriously, how likely is it that a planet thousands of years in the future will have evil characters whose names all match those of obscure late-21st-century US politicians?).
[1] He took a Harry Turtledove alien invasion novel and replaced the lizards with cute puppies with opposable thumbs. He then wrote himself into a corner, where the puppies were about to complete their successful invasion of Earth. Then, the Twilight series made vampires popular, and his publisher wanted a book right away. So, in the final chapter, Count Dracula rose from his coffin, and turned the humans into vampires. The vampires didn't need to breathe, so they rode into cis-lunar orbit holding onto the outside of an alien rocket[2], so they could attack and capture the alien puppy mothership. The end.
[2] As my sister pointed out, the sunlight outside of Earth's shadow would not be good for space vampires.
