For an appetizer, we ordered the "Golden Baskets", which were supposed to be pastry shells filled with a medly of freshly-chopped baby carrots, peas, and delicate corn kernals, mixed with diced red and green bell peppers.
It was five stale, pre-packaged mini flilo shells, each with a teaspoon of watery microwaved No-Frills(tm) frozen vegetable mix. For $7.
We had a few other dishes which were better, but basically it was nothing we couldn't make better at home.
This weekend, based on suggestions from LJ friends, we went to the Hogtown Vegan. They advertise "comfort food" made of vegan ingredients. I had beef stew made with meaty mushrooms instead of beef; Sandy had a chicken burger made with seitan. Both were great, and someone could have eaten them without guessing they had no meat products.
It was Sandy's 47th birthday, and the second anniversary of when we met! I didn't have a gift to get him, and I wouldn't have been able to get him anything good anyway, not anything as special as he is to me.
We went to see "The Revenant" in an IMAX theatre. This is a beautifully shot western movie, starring Leonardo di Caprio's shaggy beard. There are two parallel revenge stories here - a First Nations father searches for his daughter's kidnappers, and a fur trader searches for his son's murderer. It was good that the First Nations characters were not two-dimensonal or stereotyped, and were not just treated as landscape or plot devices. However, the violence was over the top. I kept cringing and grabbing Sandy for comfort (ok, maybe I had other motives for holding him tight too), but by the end Sandy was just laughing at how excessive it was.
This morning I went to the gym at 8 AM. I'm now 222 lbs - my heaviest since last May. Then I slept until the afternoon, and am now going to sleep early.
